Bio - G. J. Cuttler
G. J. Cuttler is a photographer and metal sculptor whose creative world has long lived under the name “Another Side of Sane.” His work is rooted in transformation — seeing possibility where others see scrap, and finding stories hidden inside the ordinary. That spirit has shaped both his sculptures and his photography, each medium offering a different way to explore imagination, contrast, and character.
Gary’s journey into metal art began unexpectedly in December of 2011, when his son‑in‑law gifted him a welder. With no welding experience and only a ten‑minute lesson, he wandered into the garage to experiment with a pile of discarded metal. The result was a quirky little figure he jokingly presented to his wife as “a man with a hole in his head for thinking he can weld.” She saw something more — a spark of creativity — and named it “A Man with Vision.” That moment marked the beginning of a new artistic path.
As Gary continued to bend, fuse, and reimagine forgotten materials, word of his creations spread. A friend requested a tall sunflower, leading to his first commission: the “6’ Sunflower.” When he was paid for the sculpture, Gary exclaimed, “This is insane!” His wife replied with the phrase that would become his studio name and artistic philosophy: “No — it is just Another Side of Sane.”
Gary creates unique metal sculptures by repurposing materials found on the street, in junkyards, and through magnet fishing. Each piece embodies a blend of creativity and sustainability, breathing new life into discarded metal objects. Embracing the beauty of imperfections, his work showcases the artistry that can emerge from unexpected sources.
Over the years, Gary’s sculptures have been displayed in galleries and even in a Washington, D.C. law office. Each sculpture carried its own personality, humor, and history, inviting viewers to see beyond the surface.
Due to a number of outside factors, Gary J. Cuttler will no longer be producing metal art sculptures. While this chapter has come to a close, the creative spirit behind Another Side of Sane continues. This site will remain dedicated to his body of work, but will soon shift its focus to feature Gary’s photography — a medium through which he continues to explore form, contrast, and the unexpected, still guided by the same off‑center curiosity that shaped his sculptures.
Through both sculpture and photography, Another Side of Sane remains an invitation to look at the world differently — to find character in the overlooked, beauty in the ordinary, and imagination in the spaces just beyond logic.
