I am a Metal Sculptor based in the Baltimore/DC area
I create One-of-a-Kind metal art
Gary J. Cuttler
I started creating metal art in December of 2011 when my son-in-law gifted me a welder so I could do some repairs on an old car I owned. I informed him that I had never welded before and, after a 10-minute class on how-to weld from him he said “Play with it and you will learn how to weld.”
I grabbed some scrap metal that in the garage and welded them together. I called out to my wife “Hey look, I made a man with a whole in his head for thinking he could weld!” She responded “No, that is a Man with Vision - I can sell that at a craft fair! Who made it?”
After several more days and a few more creations I realized that I had a hobby I enjoyed. I talked about it with some friends and one of them asked if I could make a tall sunflower. A few weeks later I delivered a 6’ tall Sunflower and received my first commission. “This is insane!” I told my wife, to which she replied, “No, it’s just another side of sane!”
I obtain my metal from a number of different sources that include junk yards, garage sales, flea markets, donations from people I know, and, occasionally I have been known to browse the shelves of the local hardware store.
I also magnet fish the local rivers and lakes where I have pulled out all kinds of metal objects from knives to rifles, from shopping carts to car keys, from fishhooks to fishing rods and reels and from hand tools to power tools. This not only helps to provide me material for my art, but also helps to clean our waterways since, what I can’t use, I dispose of properly.

By the way - for those who are wondering - I never did repair that old car!
